Marine Life and Coral Reefs
The park is located near Looe Key Reef, part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. This reef is one of the most beautiful and accessible coral reefs in North America, home to species like elkhorn coral, sea turtles, parrotfish, barracuda, and rays.
Endangered Species
- Silver Palm (Coccothrinax argentata): A rare species of palm found in the park’s hammock areas.
- Miami Blue Butterfly: Once thought extinct, this endangered butterfly has found refuge in Bahia Honda. Conservation efforts have focused on protecting its host plants and habitat.
- Sea Turtles: Loggerhead and green sea turtles nest on Bahia Honda’s beaches during the summer months, and rangers monitor and protect nests throughout the season.
Recreation, Education, and Interpretation
Bahia Honda State Park offers a wide range of activities:
- Beaches: Its white sand beaches, especially Sandspur Beach and Calusa Beach, have been ranked among the best in America.
